Your typical Fantasy story has A handful of heroes, a villian, and maybe a henchmen or two. Then, a bunch of people who come and go only once.
I find that a story is more interesting if the characters stick around -- if all the characters are characters and not just plot devices. Everyone has a full name, even I if it's never mentioned. Everyone has a life story, even if it's never divulged.
Here, we have our characters the story revolves around, and also our characters the story includes by circumstance.
